Things that you can see from the picture
- Referee to stop the fight when rules are not followed and to stop the fight when necessary
- Protective gear depending on the type of combat sport
- Line judge, rope to protect or to restrict the fighters to stay in-bound (or raised platform or fence in some other combat sports)
- Lose fitting clothing and appropriate foot ware within the sport
- Clearly defined floor area / boundaries
Things that you cannot see from the picture
- Athletes have warmed up and are ready physically and mentally.
- Safety rules such as: no kicks or no points for throws in boxing; no hits in judo; wrestling, hits and chokes not allowed in taichi push-hand tournments.
- Clearly defined start and stop time; Concept of rounds can be a life-saver or hindrance.
- With clearly defined opponent and nowadays, you can probably gather intelligence about your opponents as well. Furthermore, fighting within your own style or system also reduces the number of unknowns
- A decision to fight / participate has already been made usually weeks / months prior to the actual fight
