Some people have problems with the concept of ‘attacks’ because if martial arts is suppose to be for self defense only, attacks sound like you are initiating an aggression.

Conflicts leading to actual physical contact start way before the first hit is thrown. An assessment of the situation is already done and with no other viable options, you have to find a way to force a stop to your opponent’s aggression. If it means to hit before he has a chance to impose his will on you or to cause any damage, so be it. Haven’t you heard of the concept of “Attack is the best defense”?

Maybe this video from Darryl is a good lead-in to the topic of attacks.

A video link from Darryl:

Basically, it says all attacks come in 5 ways:

  • Simple direct attacks
  • Combination attacks
  • Immobilize attacks
  • Progressive indirect attacks
  • Attacks by drawing

Watch the video and try your best to answer the following questions:

  • Is it a good way to categorize attacks? Is there a 6th or 7th attack approach?
  • Is/are there different way(s) to look at this topic? How would you have done it given what you have learnt already?
