Most people like dealing with things they can see, feel and touch and tend to avoid things that are abstract or hard to measure.
Most countries honor soldiers that suffer physical injuries with medals but left those with mental damages like Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to deal with the challenges on their own.
If a child gets a black eye, most teachers deal with it immediately but with mental bullying, it is not dealt with the same urgency. Some boys may even told to “man it up”. In school, they teach you how to eat healthy and keep active to stay fit. Do they put the same emphasis on mental health?
Being physically fit provide a good “home” to your mind. However, there are biochemical and environmental changes that can affect how a person feel about himself or how he/she interact with the environment.
I am a fan of Clara Hughes more than just because of her sport accomplishments, but speaking out and raising awareness about mental illness using her own story is pure bravery.
