They all use weights but what are the differences? Do they play a part in martial arts?
They each have different emphasis.
- Body building is about size of muscle and looks. It is about poses and not above movements and speed.
- Weight lifting is a competitive sport and have specific lifts and positions to complete. It is about maximum weight in a sudden burst and do not train endurance.
- World’s strongest man is a spectator sport on work completed – always with a very heavy load and very task oriented, sometimes competes in time for speed or longest time held or sometimes for maximum work completed within a fixed time. You do see body positions and angles that you don’t see in the sport of weight lifting.
- Weight training is purposeful for fitness or for other sport and where the weight lifted is not an end to itself.
All fighting systems emphasize on efficiency and effectiveness but not all systems believe in muscle power or the use of weights. As an example, Tai-chi (Taijiquan) is known for practicing slow and relaxed. Boxing and MMA believe that stamina and physical attributes are very important.

- Given that LHBF’s base is from a soft form like Taichi, where do you think is my position in terms of the use of weights?
- Does the use of dumb bells or wrist weights help in punching power? Explain
- Can you change how you practiced last week to make training more effective?
- Given your current body condition, what do you think is your personal top priority?
- Do you want to do high reps or max weights? What is more appropriate?
- What do you absolutely need to avoid in the use of weights so that you can develop maximum power?
